When it comes to style, it’s often said the British do it best. This may in be in part due to the incredibly skilled generations of tailors found at Savile Row. This is the world’s number one destination for men’s bespoke tailoring with figures from Edward VIII to today’s most stylish leading men. Behind the façade of fine, British tailoring lies the independent intelligence agency, Kingsman. We met Galahad and his impeccably dressed crew in 2014 and they are now back, working with their American counterparts which include Halle Barry and Channing Tatum. Although the story is a little long-winded, one thing you cannot miss is the incredible fashion featured in this movie.
Featuring an authentically English wardrobe, costume designer Arianne Phillips took inspiration not from trends or runways but style icons like Cary Grant and Sean Connery. What we love in this movie is the clever juxtaposition of British double-breasted suits and American leather and denim. As half the movie is set in Kentucky, we get to see Phillip’s take on stylish but traditional Americana. We see contrasting colours used as well where the Kingsman team chooses classic stripes, greys and whites while the Statesmen team goes for lots of whiskey, tobacco and denim inspired hues. What’s even more clever is how these men jump out of ski lifts, get shot at and are thrown around while still looking sharp as ever.
Key pieces from the movie include slim suit jackets in silk, wool and mohair; oxford shirts, penny loafers, shawl-collar cardigans and of course, the signature spectacles. One of our favourite outfits from the movie comes about in the first few scenes when ‘Eggsy’ goes to visit his girlfriend’s royal parents in a bright orange tuxedo jacket made out of pure velvet. The rectangle acetate glasses add a touch of old world charm to this otherwise bold fashion move. Channing Tatum dresses as one would expect any cowboy turned secret service agent to dress, a lined dark denim jacket, crisp white shirt and tan cowboy hat. Spoiler alert: Colin Firth comes back as the beloved Harry (this time with one eye less) and wows us with his mix of classic tailoring and effortless style. A true Englishman, Harry wears pinstripes like he was born in them.
The movie takes us from London to Kentucky, to the Italian Alps and through Asia with panache and elegance. What’s even more exciting than the clothes is the ethos behind Harry and his comrades. The idea that ‘manners man maketh’ prove that without your pleases and thankyous, you’ll never reach the top. Being a confident, loyal and even polite agent is what helps the Kingsman stand out of the crowd. Oh, and don’t forget the memorable cameos by hottie Poppy Delevigne and icon Elton John!
